It started with a wedding gift
Hi, I'm Aidan. By day I'm a software engineer, and Recall The Day began with a simple goal: I wanted to give my brother something special for his wedding.
I loved the idea of an audio guestbook, so I decided to build one myself. I took an old telephone, fitted a microcontroller board inside it, and wrote the code to play a greeting and record a message whenever someone lifted the receiver.
On the day, it was a hit. Guests queued up to tell stories, share advice and leave messages that still make us laugh. Listening back afterwards, I realised how much more a voice holds than a few lines in a book.
From one phone to a collection
After the wedding, I couldn't stop. I started experimenting with other kinds of phones, each with its own quirks and wiring, and somewhere along the way I got hooked on tracking down vintage handsets from across the UK. Many arrive dusty and no longer working, but each one carries a bit of history.
These days my favourite part is bringing them back to life: cleaning them up, repairing what's worn, and fitting each one with electronics that record clear audio. Every phone is set up and tested by hand here in Balcombe, Mid Sussex, before it heads off to weddings and events across the UK.
